Product Key Finder updated
After a bit of inactivity I’ve updated my product key finder with support for the following applications:
- AutoCAD
- Adobe Acrobat 6
- Adobe Acrobat 8
- Office XP
- Office XP Publisher
If anyone has any feature requests feel free to drop me a line.
This application will not generate license keys, it will recover them from your system. It will not help you pirate software.
Hi Dave: I found your program Product Key on the internet via a Google search. I purchased the Microsoft program Windows Live OneCare at Best Buy. However, Microsoft was providing a 90 day trial of it, so I downloaded it and used it for the 90 days before opening the package;. Like a dummy, I opened the package and discarded the packaging itself and didn’t realize the product key was on it, and when I started to install the program, I was asked for the product key, but by that time the package was in landfill heaven. So, I guess you know what my problem is. Do you have any ideas as to how I can recover the product key from the installation CD? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Chuck
Hi Chuck,
I’m sorry to hear your license is already on the way to the landfill. The keys are not stored on the disk anywhere, and since it’s not alreayd installed anywhere there’s nothing I or anyone else can do to help you.
All that you’ll be able to do is contact Microsoft, explain what has happened and provide them with as much proof of purchase information as you can.
Dave
Can you find the product key information for Window 2007 Vista? I used the product key provided through your other program but it did not work.
Sophia,
It should already find the vista key. Can I make sure you’re just trying to recover the key after installation rather than use it to try and generate a key?
Dave
Can you find the product key for Office 2007? I need to repair/reinstall WORD and the key that I copied from the package after I initally installed Office and before I discarded the package seems to be incorrect.
Jerry,
Yea, it should already pick up your Office 2007 key from your installation.
Dave
Hi, I am using windows vista home basic pack. But now it is asking product key if i type my product key it is asking another key. So please give the solution for this.
Narendra,
Alas, there’s nothing I can do. That indicates you’ve not entered one yet and all my utility does it retreives the key from your system.
Your best bet is to try entering the key which is on the product packaging, or give whoever you purchased it from a call.
Dave
Dave, I have Vista Enterprise, with changeing bedrooms and the office around I lost my Vista box and everything, CD packaging the works. My Vista is draging really bad, I want to do a reinstall without loseing my information. A friend lond me his DVD to do the reinstall. I used your Key finder and several others on the web and everyone says that my Key Code is 25 “B”‘s. Got any ideas? Thanks for the time.
Hi Rick,
How weird – not ever seen that before. I don’t have a vista install to test with. If you can do the following I’ll see if I can help.
– Click Start;
– Click Run
– Type ‘regedit’ and hit enter
– Expand the tree menu in the left until HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
is selected.
– Click File -> Export and save the file when prompted.
– Zip up that file (Right click, sent-to compressed zip file)
– E-mail that to dave at davehope dot co dot uk

Hi Abigail,
It sounds like you just have a trial of office, not the full version. I’m afraid there’s nothing you can do, you’ll need to get in touch with whoever you bought your computer from and see if you can buy a license from them.
Dave
Greetings,
Any chance you can make it look for my Adobe CS key?
Thanks
hey dave,

Denee,
That shouldn’t be a problem, drop me an e-mail and I’ll see what I can do.

You said this works for finding autocad keys?
Hi Kate,
That depends on which version of Autocad you have. Follow the above instructions if you have problems and I’ll see if I can help.
Is it possible to retrive the serial key of Adobe Professional 8 from the registry with your product key finder?
Hi Bishakha,
Probably – drop me an e-mail and I’ll see if I can help.
Hey Dave, I got a Windows XP Pro CD from a friend and completely wiped out my computer and tried to install XP. Xp is asking for a product key of course I nor she has it, is there any way I can find it, or do I have to contact Microsoft? thanks bud
Also a buddy told me to go to the unattend file in the E:/I386 folder to find a key, which I did and found a key but it still said invalid, please help thanks
Hi Chris,
My utility will only recover the key from a system which already has XP installed. If you run it on a computer with XP it’ll show you the key that was used during installation.
The key in unattend.txt is unlikely to be valid for your SKU.
If the version of XP you have came with a computer, you’ll need to look at the sticker on the back of it for the key.
If you bought it retail you’ll need to look in the box for the license key.
Ok, I understand but the CD she gave is just a copy of the program, is there any way to extract or find out the key for the cd? What does SKU stand for. I used your other program and yes it worked for the computer that Im on now, but not the CD.
Chris,
There’s no way of getting the key from the disc. The keys are not stored on the disk.
SKU is the edition of windows, so Retail (sold in shops), OEM (shipped with the computer) etc. Each have different keys.
Ok so what would you suggest for me to do with the copy cd, can I contact microsoft and they send me a product key, there isn’t any type of master product key or anything is there? thanks for all your help
Chris,
There’s no master key.
If you’ve copied the CD from a friend, or borrowed it from a friend Microsoft wont help you as you’ll be using their software illegally.
Your best bet is to ask your friend which CD key came with the disk and use that. (once they’ve removed it from their computer).
Hi Dave,
Oops.. I hit enter to soon. I found your blog through google search. I’ve lost a key for Adobe acrobat 7 and wondered if you could help me recover it. We need to move it to a different computer but I don’t have the disk to with the key anymore. It’s been lost in a move. If you can help that would be great thanks.
Hi Elisabeth,
I should be able to help – How did you get on with the current version of my product key finder? – Did it pick it up?
Hi Dave, I was wondering if you could help me..?
I have downloaded a trial version of Microsoft Office Standard 2007 as well as the product key finder program, but when I paste the product key into the box, this appears below the box: ‘The key is incorrect. Verify that you have the correct key, and then retype it.’ Would you be able to help me with this?
[I have tried typing the product key in and checking it, repeatedly.]
If you are unable to help, thanks anyway.
Rebecca.
Hi Rebecca,
Where did you get the key from? – I don’t think the trial versions need a license key, they just limit you to 25 times before you need to buy?
Thanks,
Dave
Well, the first time it worked for a few months, the second time it limited me to twenty-five times, and this time I can’t seem to get it to work — it is running on limited functions, so nothing works and it keeps asking for the product key.
I have the product key finder from this website.
Thanks.
It’s alright now, as I have installed a purchased version from the store, so it works fine.
Hello, Dave.
We have a legit copy of Office 2000 (Academic) for which I can’t find the product key, packaging, or anything else. We need to move it to a newer computer, so I tried your product, which works just fine- on the provided list of software. (It even found the code for the Works 8 we don’t use anymore!)
But 2000 isn’t on the list, just later programs. Can you help? I’ve searched for older versions than 1.2.4.861, but without success.
Thanks.
Hi Doug,
Unfortunately Microsoft didn’t store the cd key (DigitalProductId) for Office 2000. It was validated when the software was installed and not stored on the computer.
You’ll probably not find any software capable of recovering your office 200 license key.
Hi Dave,
I had adobe CS3 but after I installed an update it kept coming up with something like Adobe Acrobat 8 had an error and must close, so I tried the repair function. This didn’t help. I then chose the remove function with the intention of reinstalling but can’t find the CD or the key. I still have the shortcuts for photoshop etc but they ask for the key, which I can’t find.
Help
Cheers
JG
Hi JG,
Can you drop me an e-mail (using the contact form on my site) and I’ll give you some instructions which may help to recover your old license key.
Thanks,
Dave
Nice app… Did they ever integrate it into Openaudit? Been using that and spiceworks myself but not sure which I like better… OA is much faster on the screen but not as rich in features…
can you use the CLI to run the script on a remote machine? I could use pstools I guess… just wondering…thx!
Geez.. how many of these comments are from MS Directly… or BSA… wow… some really dumb questions. They want to find some reason to throw this sweet little IT Guy gem out the door. The keys getting lost in the vast sea of machines I’ve got is a normal occurrence due to the past IT guys not buying volume licenses. Easier / cheaper to purchase machines with installed / bundled software. but then licensing becomes a nightmare.
Hi,
I’ve not heard that Spiceworks or OpenAudIT are using it. If they’re interested in using it I’m more than happy to help them out, providing a DLL of the functionality any other integration options.
You can use psexecc and the /csv option to my application which will create a file named the computer name. Or maybe include in a login script.
There’s no network support at present, but there’s no reason I can’t add it in (other than a lack of development time)
Thanks
Dave
Hi Dave,
I have installed MS Office 2007 trail version in my system.
Each time I open some documents or excel sheet it asks for product key. I do not have the product key for the same.
Can you please help me out?
Thanks
Ekta
Hi Ekta,
If you only have the trial version of Office 2007, my application isn’t going to be much help.
My Product Key Finder will only recover the license keys from installed licensed software. It wont automatically generate keys for you, only recover existing ones.
I’d suggest you contact your local Microsoft reseller to purchase the product.
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave
I purchase a Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 when i type in the product key a message appears saying it’s invalid, I did have the 60 day trail, but now im baffel how to get the product key that came with the package active
Hi Kesh,
If you’re having problems getting your purchased key to work I’d suggest you contact Microsoft Support.
Hi Dave
I am running windows Vista with office xp. I ran your app on this system to verify its accuracy before running on another machine i have which is win xp and office 2003 and I have lost all documentation. The vista/office xp machine I have all the information so i would be able to verify the results. upon running the app it gave me the Key for my vista installation which appears to be different to the number on the OEM Sticker and it has not picked up any other pieces of software that I have especially the office XP. do you have any suggestions that may help?
Thanks in anticipation
Hi Graeme,
First of all, make sure you’re running the latest version, which you can find here:
http://davehope.co.uk/projects/product-key-finder/
The reason ProductKeyFinder displays a different key to your OEM sticker is that companies install operating systems on the PCs they sell with the same CD Key, leaving it up to you to enter your key if you ever need to (you usually wont need to though).
If you drop me an e-mail (dave at davehope dot co dot uk) I’ll see if I can get it to pickup some more of your software
Thanks
Dave
Hi Dave,
I was wondering if you could help me please.
I bought a copy of MS Office 2007 Home and Student a couple of years ago, and I’ve recently had my computer wiped. When trying to re install it’s asking for the product key which I have wirtten down but it’s saying its invalid! I’ve only ever installed it once, and I’m pretty sure the guy in the shop said I could have 3 installs.
My hand writing is a bit crap and I reckon I’ve just copied it down wrong.
What should I do?
Hi Amy,
Assuming you’re using the same disk you used the first time, you must have written the key down incorrectly. That, or the key you have written down isn’t for the version you’ve installed.
The 3 install limit the salesman mentioned isn’t the problem in this instance, that only limits the number of times you can activate the software. Since you’re not able to enter the key it hasn’t got that far.
When you bought the software it should have come packaged, the key will be with that packaging. Do you still have it?
Just curious, used your program to get an Acrobat 8 key, and it worked, but it added an extra ‘zero’ at the end of the key. Is this a common problem? Obviously we can work around it if we know, but I’m wondering if this is something you knew about.
Hi Aaron,
Thanks for letting me know – I spotted this the other day and have an updated version in testing.
It it passes my acceptance testing the updated version (with some new features) will get uploaded this weekend.
Thanks
Hi Dave,
needed to retrieve my Adobe keys to transfer across to my new PC but i cant download your file as i get an access error?

Hi Jim
Which version are you trying to download?
There’s a pre-release version located here that you can try:

Thanks
Dave
